I had a opportunity to revisit The Royal Selangor Visitor Centre again last December to sample Ombak Kitchen’s ocean-fresh dining experience with its 'Pakai Tangan Jer' concept and irresistible Cajun sauce. As one part of the celebration of Royal Selangor’s 135th year in artistry and craftsmanship excellence, Royal Selangor has teamed up with Ombak Kitchen for a one of a kind hands-on pewter-making experience with a seafood meal at @thecafe at Royal Selangor Visitor Centre for a weekend.

The world's largest pewter tankard @ The Royal Selangor Visit Centre |
Our afternoon at the Royal Selangor Visitor Centre was started by a guided tour around the gallery and factory. |
One of the oldest and signature products produced at the Royal Selangor - a melon-shaped teapot which design dated back to 1885.
In the gallery, we get to see the an excellent collection of beautiful and historical pewter products and also learn the science and history of pewter making and its applications.
You can't miss these Pewter hand prints of the long serving employees on the wall at the Royal Selangor Visitor Centre.
The tour brought us to the factory floor where all the pewter merchandise were made. There, we saw some live demonstrations by the skillful craftswomen. |
A demonstration of how tankard handle were made from molten pewter.
| Let's try some hands on experience to decorate a pewter tankard. |
A replica of a crocodile-shaped ancient pewter currency believed to be used by the royal courts of Malay Peninsula in the olden days.
At the School of Hard Knocks, we had a hands on mini project to make a pewter bowl with our name engraved at the bottom using some similar tools that were used over 100 years ago.

It's all about the seafood @ The Cafe this weekend! |
The visit to the gallery, factory and the School of Hard Knocks has left us hungry! We are all ready to eat! With our hands! |
This is what you called a HANDS ON experience!
A savoury mouth-watering mix of fresh mussels, prawns, squids, broccoli, potato and corn cooked in a spicy Cajun sauce.
Pakai tangan jer! No plates and cutlery are needed. They just placed a sheet of wax liner on the table and poured the food on top...
Fingers licking good! We wiped clean the table clean! LOL! Thank you Ombak Kitchen for the scrumptious meal!
After the satisfying meal we took some time to enjoy the cozy atmosphere at The Cafe while sipping on some freshy-brewed tea served in a Royal Selangor's signature Melon Teapot! What an afternoon it has been!
It was a creative initiative to invite
locals to spend a lovely weekend exploring Malaysian history, arts and culture with
good food within a short trip from home.
